Mets Eliminate the Phillies-Advance to National League Championship Series

For five-plus innings Wednesday the sellout crowd at Citi Field waited patiently for the chance to erupt, and finally Francisco Lindor’s mighty bat delivered a sixth-inning grand slam.

The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-1, and head to the National League Championship Series.

Lindor went ahead 2-1 in the count before launching a 99-mph fastball over the fence in right-center to start the countdown party. Nine outs later, the Mets celebrated the first home clincher in Citi Field’s 16 seasons of existence.

It was just the latest dramatic blast for Lindor, whose ninth-inning homer in Atlanta on Sept. 30 in the first game of a doubleheader helped clinch a postseason berth for the Mets.

The Phillies were the NL East champions, but that designation got them exactly one playoff victory. The Mets, who entered the postseason as a wild card with the No. 6 seed, needed a victory on the final day of the regular season just to reach the playoffs. They followed with two victories in three games to win the NL Wild Card Series in Milwaukee.

Reed Garrett, David Peterson and Diaz combined on four scoreless innings in relief behind a superb start from Jose Quintana.

Giants Block Game-Tying Field Goal Try, Beat Seahawks

Geno Smith and the Seattle Seahawks’ offense fell flat on Sunday afternoon at home. That opened the door for Daniel Jones and the New York Giants, who held on late and ran a blocked field goal back for a touchdown in the final minute to grab a 29-20 win in Seattle.

The Giants (2-3), after dropping back-to-back games to open the season, have now won two of their past three. The Seahawks (3-2) have lost two straight.

Smith entered Sunday afternoon as the league’s passing leader after he threw for a career-high 395 yards in their loss to the Detroit Lions last Monday. That loss marked their first of the season, and was Smith’s second game with at least 300 passing yards this season.

But on Sunday, Smith couldn’t get much going until the very end. He completed 28 of 40 passes for 284 yards and one touchdown. He was also Seattle’s rushing leader with 73 yards on the ground.

Jones and the Giants took full advantage. After entering halftime tied 10-10, the Giants took the lead out of the locker room after Jones hit Darius Slayton for a 30-yard touchdown pass in the corner of the end zone.

Jones went 23-of-34 for 257 yards with two touchdowns in the win for the Giants. Tyrone Tracy led them on the ground with 129 yards on 18 carries. Slayton finished with 122 yards and a touchdown on eight catches.
