  • Jets Bolster Defense With Signing of Former 1st-Round Pick

With Sauce Gardner, Quinnen Williams, CJ Mosley, and others already in tow, the New York Jets are adding yet another ex-first-round draft pick to their defense.

The Jets have signed veteran edge rusher Takkarist “Takk” McKinley to a free-agent deal. McKinley, 28, had spent the last two seasons on the practice squad of the Dallas Cowboys.

A first-round pick in 2017 (No. 26 overall), McKinley played the first four seasons of his career with the Atlanta Falcons. He then joined the Cleveland Browns and then the L.A. Rams as an active roster member. McKinley has also been a practice-squad member of the Las Vegas Raiders, Tennessee Titans, and finally the Cowboys.

With 20 career sacks and 98 combined tackles to his name, the 6-foot-2, 250-pound McKinley may be worth the dart throw. He will provide some additional depth on the right side of the defensive line.

  • Chicago Cubs Rout New York Mets 8-1

The Chicago Cubs crushed the New York Mets 8-1.

The Mets had a rough first inning Saturday thanks to Tylor Megill’s worst frame of the season, and the day didn’t get any better in the second.

Starling Marte grounded out in that inning and when the Mets returned to play defense, the 35-year-old outfielder wasn’t among the nine players.

Marte exited with right knee soreness, according to the Mets, putting a potential crimp in a lineup that has executed at a high level for the last week.

For right-hander Megill, it was his worst outing of the season, allowing six earned runs on five hits and three walks with six strikeouts over three innings.

Overall, it was an afternoon worth forgetting for the Mets, who lost 8-1 to the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

  • Panthers Win The Stanley Cup, Beat Oilers in 7

For the first time in history, the Florida Panthers are Stanley Cup champions.

Florida won a 2-1 Game 7 thriller on Monday night over the Edmonton Oilers to secure a 4-3 series victory in the Stanley Cup Final. The win staved off a historic collapse after the Oilers rallied from a 3-0 series deficit to tie the series at 3-3.

After allowing 18 goals in consecutive losses in Games 4-6, Florida’s defense returned to form Monday night anchored by a stellar performance from goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, who turned back 23 of 24 Edmonton shots, including a late Oilers flurry that threatened to tie the game.

Edmonton’s Connor McDavid secured the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the entire Stanley Cup playoffs despite his team’s loss. He’s the sixth player in NHL history to win the award from a losing team.

  • Yankees Lose Ian Hamilton, Cody Poteet To Injuries In Blow To Pitching Depth

The Yankees pitching depth took a hit as right-handers Ian Hamilton and Cody Poteet went on the Injured List.

Hamilton won’t throw for 3-4 weeks after suffering a lat strain in his last appearance. And Poteet went down with a right triceps strain and will be shut down for 1-2 weeks.

To take the spots on the roster, the Yankees recalled lefty Clayton Andrews from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and signed left-hander Anthony Misiewicz to a major league contract and selected him to the active roster.

They still need to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Misiewicz.

Hamilton has been a key piece to the bullpen each of the last two years and Poteet filled in well in the rotation after Clarke Schmidt hit the IL.

Mays is regarded as one of the greatest players in Major League Baseball history and had an illustrious career spanning 23 seasons. Mays, also known as the “Say Hey Kid,” was a two-time National League MVP, a 24-time All-Star, and a 12-time Gold Glove winner.

Mays is remembered not only for his power at the plate, which resulted in 660 home runs, the sixth most in MLB history, but also for his sensational defensive skills as a center fielder. • Rams Tackle Aaron Donald Retires

Los Angeles Rams All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald announced his retirement after 10 NFL seasons.

Donald, 32, widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive tackles in NFL history, spent his entire career with the Rams, having been selected by the franchise at No. 13 overall in the 2014 NFL Draft prior to its relocation from St. Louis to Los Angeles and Super Bowl LVI victory in 2022.

“For 10 years, I have been fortunate to play the game of football at the highest level. I’m thankful for the people I’ve met along the way, the relationships I’ve built and the things I’ve accomplished with my teammates and individually,” Donald said.

Donald is a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year (2017, 2018, 2020), which is tied with Lawrence Taylor and J.J. • UFC 303 at Hoops Cabaret and Sports Bar in New York City, Saturday, June 29

NEW YORK — You are invited to Hoops Cabaret New York, the city’s sexiest sports bar, to watch UFC 303, featuring Alex Pereira vs. Jiri Prochazka leading the fight card, on Saturday night, June 29.

The fan-favorite Hoops Cabaret is a great place to watch sporting events, with multiple giant screens, Hi-Def TVs, and its futuristic Mega-Tron Video Wall. Every seat has a clear view of the action.

Last week, the UFC broke the news that an injury had forced former  two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor out of his scheduled UFC 303 bout opposite Michael Chandler. With the long anticipated matchup between McGregor and Chandler off the upcoming pay-per-view card, the UFC scrambled for a replacement fight.

The promotion found that matchup in two of the more exciting fighters on the roster, current UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira and former 205-pound titleholder Jiri Prochazka.

Pereira and Prochazka first faced each other at UFC 295 in November 2023. Pereira claimed the vacant light heavyweight title on that night, when he scored a second-round TKO victory over the former champion.

Since that victory, Pereira has one title defense to his name, an April first-round knockout triumph over another former UFC champion, Jamahal Hill. As for Prochazka, he defeated Aleksandar Rakic on that same card, UFC 300, via a second round TKO. Prochazka is the No. 1 fighter in the official UFC light heavyweight rankings.

Hoops Cabaret combines the fun of a sports bar with the excitement of a gentlemen’s club. “We love the UFC,” said Hoops girl Sabrina. “And we also love performing on stage and up close and personal for you. Hoops is like a sports fan’s dream come to life!”

  • Celtics Win Record 18th NBA Championship With Game 5 Rout of Mavericks

For the 18th time in franchise history, the Boston Celtics are NBA champions.

The Celtics closed the first quarter of Monday’s NBA Finals Game 5 on a 9-0 run and never looked back en route to a dominant 106-88 win over the Dallas Mavericks. The win secured a 4-1 win in the NBA Finals and the franchise’s first title since 2008.

The Celtics set the tone from the opening tip as they took the floor for the first time in these Finals wearing their classic green jerseys. They proceeded to put on a performance worthy of those colors. It was also worthy of a team that rolled to an NBA-best 64 wins in the regular season and produced advanced metrics that rank among the best in league history.

They did it on Monday with defense. They did it with 3s. They did it with stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown leading the way. It was an optimal conclusion to the Celtics season.
